Dear NLA and GYLA family,
After careful review of available information relating to the impact of the coronavirus and COVID-19, the National Leadership Academy and our Global Youth Leadership Academy team has decided to cancel NLA 2020 that was to occur June 25-28, 2020 and GYLA Norway 2020 that was to occur July 14-21, 2020. The health and safety of our student participants has always remained paramount and remains our steadfast compass in making this difficult decision.
NLA and GYLA provides inspiration, motivation, and a life changing experience for our student participants. For over twenty years, NLA and GYLA have given high school students a powerful environment to connect, learn, bridge friendships, and develop lifelong leadership skills to thousands of youth. We are heartbroken that we will not have the opportunity to share NLA and GYLA with you this summer. But we are prepared to meet this challenge head-on, creatively, and with our future attendees in mind every step of the way. We are already counting the days until we see you next year at NLA or GYLA 2021!
Please mark your calender for our 21st annual National Leadership Academy next June 24-27, 2021 and our Global Youth Leadership Academy next July 11-18, 2021. And we are also working on launching our first ever GYLA Family programs next summer. We remain hopeful to continue to serve high school students and families for the next twenty years.
Lastly, I want to personally thank Holly Bryan, Tracy Hindman and all our NLA & GYLA volunteers for their steadfast commitment to serving our student participants. I am deeply humbled by their integrity and passion to love and serve all of our constituents.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why can’t you just delay the start of NLA or GYLA 2020?
Our team considered a variety of scenarios in processing this difficult decision, including later dates, or going virtual with NLA. But because of the lead time necessary to develop a virtual program and the loss of magic of an in-person NLA and GYLA experience, along with the uncertainty of school recovery calendars, state and federal mandates related to health and safety, and unknown complications of domestic and international travel, we determined that the factors beyond our control far outweighed what we could manage effectively.
Will I get a refund?
All student participants are eligible to receive a full refund of any deposit fees. Refunds will be processed as quickly as possible. Our team will reach out personally to any family that has paid a deposit. Also, please see below under What can I do to help? for other options on deposit refunds.
Can I save my spot now for NLA or GYLA 2021?
Yes. If you have already turned in your application for NLA or GYLA 2020 your spot is secured and rolled over to NLA or GYLA 2021.
What can I do to help?
We ask for your patience. Our staff is currently working from our homes and doing everything possible to respond to inquiries and messages in a timely manner. Second, please consider supporting NLA by donating, or turning your deposit for NLA or GYLA into a tax-deductible donation. This cancellation has dealt an unprecedented financial impact on our non-profit. We are strong, disciplined, efficient and well managed. But even the very best organizations are suffering under these exceptional circumstances. At the Tommy Spaulding Leadership Institute, the wellbeing of our students, staff, and volunteers is always our highest priority. Accordingly, we are maintaining this update page to share information regarding the Coronavirus or COVID-19.

We are monitoring this situation closely, consulting trusted sources that include the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization, and U.S. State Department. To learn more about COVID-19, we recommend visiting the CDC’s dedicated page.

National Leadership Academy in Denver is still 13 weeks out (June 25 – 28, 2020), and Global Youth Leadership Academy Norway is still 16 weeks (July 14 – 21, 2020). We believe the best course of action at this time is to continue to monitor developments and provide updates here.

We realize this is an extraordinary situation, impacting our students, staff, volunteers, their families, and communities. It’s important to all of us at the Tommy Spaulding Leadership Academy that you feel comfortable about your experiential travel with us.
